Mechanical engineering core¶
The shared mechanical syllabus for GATE ME and the mechanical papers of JE-level exams. The overlap map lists every exam that counts it.
What it covers¶
- Applied mechanics and design: engineering mechanics, strength of materials, theory of machines, vibrations, machine design
- Fluid mechanics and thermal sciences: fluid mechanics and machinery, thermodynamics, heat transfer, IC engines, refrigeration and air-conditioning, turbomachinery, power-plant basics
- Materials, manufacturing and industrial engineering: engineering materials, casting, forming, joining, machining, metrology, CAD/CAM and automation, production planning, inventory, operations research
Where it counts¶
| Family | Exams |
|---|---|
| GATE | GATE Mechanical Engineering (ME) — official ME syllabus (PDF) |
| JE (SSC JE Mechanical, diploma level) | SSC JE 2025 notice with syllabus (PDF) (§14.2.3.3 Paper I, §14.3.3 Paper II) |
Depth by exam family¶
| Family | What the exam rewards |
|---|---|
| GATE ME | Full depth in all three blocks, including vibrations, additive manufacturing and operations research; MCQ, MSQ and NAT |
| SSC JE / RRB JE (Mechanical) | Same blocks at diploma level, with more weight on thermal, fluid machinery and production processes |

How to practise¶
Thermodynamics and strength of materials first: several other subjects build on them. Then solve official previous papers topic by topic.
