Exam pattern

Preliminary Test (objective, screening). General Studies and Mental Ability, 150 questions, 150 marks, 2½ hours; held in English, Telugu and Urdu. It shortlists candidates for the Main examination at 50 times the number of vacancies in each Multi-Zone, and its marks are not counted for final ranking.

Main examination (descriptive). General English is a qualifying paper only (150 marks, 3 hours, Secondary School Certificate standard; minimum 40% for OC / EWS / Meritorious Sportsperson, 35% for BC and 30% for SC / ST / PH). The merit list is built from six papers of 150 marks each, 3 hours each:

Paper Subject Marks
Paper-I General essay — three essays, one from each section, 50 marks each 150
Paper-II History, culture and geography 150
Paper-III Indian society, constitution and governance 150
Paper-IV Economy and development 150
Paper-V Science & technology and data interpretation 150
Paper-VI Telangana movement and state formation 150
Total counted 900

Qualifying marks in the Main examination: 40% of the aggregate for OC / EWS / Meritorious Sportsperson, 35% for BC and 30% for SC / ST / PH. Candidates must appear in all papers; absence in any paper disqualifies them. After the Main examination the commission does certificate verification (with web options for post and Multi-Zone) and medical fitness checks; selection follows Main-examination merit.

How to prepare (free, in order)

  1. Prepare the shared UPSC GS modules once, then add Telangana-specific history, movement, geography, economy and policies from official state sources.
  2. Practise descriptive writing early: the Main exam is six 3-hour written papers, and Paper-I alone needs three essays in 3 hours.
