Legal reasoning¶
Shared law-entrance module: CLAT, AILET and MAH CET Law all test it. The overlap map has the full list.
What it covers¶
- Principle application from passages: read a passage stating legal rules or principles, identify and infer them, then apply them to given fact situations. MAH CET Law frames these as legal prepositions plus facts.
- Changed-rule reasoning: work out how the answer alters when the rule or principle changes (CLAT).
- Legal-style logical reasoning: AILET folds this into its Logical Reasoning section, where legal principles may appear to test aptitude.
- Background awareness: a general sense of contemporary legal and moral issues helps. No prior knowledge of law is required by any of the three exams: CLAT says so explicitly, AILET requires no legal knowledge or technical understanding, and MAH CET instructs candidates to assume the given prepositions true even when they are not true in real life.
Depth by exam family¶
| Family | Exams | How deep |
|---|---|---|
| CLAT (Consortium of NLUs) | CLAT | Dedicated Legal Reasoning section of ~450-word passages; no prior law needed |
| NLU Delhi | AILET (NLU Delhi) | No separate section; legal principles appear inside 70-question Logical Reasoning |
| Maharashtra CET | MAH CET Law | Legal Aptitude and Legal Reasoning is 24 of 120 questions (3-year LLB 2026), no negative marking |

How to practise¶
Principle → facts → conclusion: use only what the passage gives, assume its propositions true, then re-answer after tweaking the rule. Practise on the official papers above, not coaching compilations.
