Exam pattern¶
Paper-I (computer-based): 200 objective questions, 200 marks, 2 hours (2 hours 40 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates), with a sectional timer of 1 hour per part (1 hour 20 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates); −0.25 negative marking per wrong answer. - Part-I: General Hindi (100 questions, 100 marks) - Part-II: General English (100 questions, 100 marks)
Paper-I scores shortlist candidates, category-wise, for Paper-II. If conducted in multiple shifts, marks are normalized using the Commission's official formula.
Paper-II (descriptive): 200 marks, 2 hours (2 hours 40 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates) — two passages for translation (one Hindi to English, one English to Hindi) and an essay each in Hindi and English.
Minimum qualifying marks (Paper-I): 30% for UR (60/200), 25% for OBC/EWS (50/200), and 20% for all other categories (40/200).
Final merit: 50% weightage of the scores in Paper-I and 100% of the marks in Paper-II (effective 300-mark scale), with possible separate category-wise cut-offs in each paper (per the notice).
Resolution of ties: (i) Total marks in Paper-II; (ii) Date of birth, with older candidates placed higher; (iii) Alphabetical order of candidate names.
Syllabus¶
The notice's indicative syllabus:
- Paper-I (General Hindi & General English, degree level): Tests candidates' understanding of the languages and literature, correct use of words, phrases and idioms, grammar (sandhi, samas, karak, ling, vachan, tenses, voice, narration, prepositions), vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, proverbs), and the ability to write both languages correctly, precisely and effectively.
- Paper-II (Translation and Essay): Contains two passages for translation — one passage from Hindi to English and one passage from English to Hindi — and an essay each in Hindi and English. Tests candidates' translation skill and ability to write and comprehend both languages correctly, precisely and effectively at the prescribed educational qualification level.
How to prepare (free, in order)¶
- Build grammar and vocabulary foundations in parallel (Paper-I):
- Study Hindi grammar (vyakaran) using Class 9–12 NCERT Hindi textbooks alongside the shared Hindi language module.
- Master English grammar rules (parts of speech, subject-verb agreement, voice, narration) using the shared English language and comprehension module.
- Keep a daily terminology notebook (shabdavali) of administrative phrases, synonyms, antonyms, and idioms.
- Practice bidirectional translation daily (Paper-II Translation):
- Translate one passage (150–200 words) from Hindi to English and one from English to Hindi daily.
- Use official government press releases on the Press Information Bureau website (https://pib.gov.in) and bilingual central acts/gazettes to master standard administrative terminology (karyalayi bhasha).
- Compare draft translations with official versions to eliminate translation loss and literal translation traps.
- Draft bilingual essays weekly (Paper-II Essay):
- Write one essay in Hindi and one in English each week on socio-economic, administrative, literature, or current national topics following the Essay and descriptive writing module.
- Practice structuring arguments clearly with crisp introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions under timed conditions.
- Timed objective practice with sectional discipline (Paper-I):
- Practice official SSC JHT previous years' Paper-I questions in 60-minute blocks per language part (100 questions in 1 hour).
- Track accuracy strictly to minimize the −0.25 negative marking deduction.
- Full-length hand-written Paper-II simulations:
- Write the entire 2-hour descriptive paper (both translations and both essays) by hand under exam conditions to build writing endurance and maintain legible handwriting.
