Electronics and communication core

Used by the engineering-jobs family (GATE EC, GATE IN and the PSU/AE/JE papers that recruit on them). The overlap map has the full list.

What it covers

Checked against the official GATE 2027 syllabi for EC and IN (links below):

  • Networks, signals and systems: node/mesh analysis, network theorems, two-port networks, transient and phasor response; LTI systems, convolution, Fourier/Laplace/z-transforms, DFT/FFT, sampling and FIR/IIR basics.
  • Electronic devices and analog circuits: semiconductors, p-n junction, BJT, MOSFET, optoelectronic devices; diode circuits, amplifiers, op-amps, filters, oscillators.
  • Digital circuits: Boolean algebra, combinational and sequential logic, ADCs/DACs, semiconductor memories, computer organisation basics (IN adds microcontrollers, data acquisition and IoT basics).
  • Control systems: transfer functions, block diagrams, signal flow graphs, transient/steady-state response, Routh-Hurwitz/Nyquist stability, Bode and root-locus plots, PID and compensators, state-space.
  • Communications: random processes and noise, analog modulation (AM/FM), digital modulation (ASK/PSK/FSK/QAM), information theory, error control (IN adds optical sources, fiber-optic sensing and 4-20 mA loops).
  • Electromagnetics: Maxwell's equations, plane waves, transmission lines, Smith chart, waveguides, antennas (IN covers the electrostatics/magnetostatics subset under Electricity and Magnetism).

Where it counts

Family Exams
Engineering jobs: GATE, ESE, JE, PSU, state AE/JE GATE Electronics and Communication (EC), GATE Instrumentation Engineering (IN)

Depth by exam family

Family What the exam rewards
GATE EC Full depth on all six groups above, numerical plus theory
GATE IN Overlapping subset: signals, control, analog/digital, communications and electromagnetics basics; plus measurements, sensors and optical instrumentation beyond this module

How to practise

Networks and signals first; they feed control and communications. Then analog plus digital together. Solve official GATE EC/IN previous papers topic-wise from week one.
