Exam pattern

The admission process consists of two stages, common across all participating NIDs:

Stage 1: DAT Prelims

  • Format: Paper-and-pencil/pen test conducted simultaneously at all centres.
  • Duration: Announced on the admit card.
  • Question type: Questions may involve text and visuals.
  • Medium: English only.
  • Common paper: Single test paper for B.Des./Integrated M.Des.; single common test paper for all M.Des. disciplines.
  • Scoring: Used only for shortlisting to DAT Mains. Prelims marks are not carried forward to the final merit.

Stage 2: DAT Mains

Shortlisted candidates (2.5× seats per category) are invited.

For B.Des. / 5.5-Year Integrated M.Des.
DAT Mains consists of two parts: 1. Studio Sensitivity Test — hands-on tasks assessing material handling, visualisation, and creative problem-solving. 2. In-Person Sensitivity Test — evaluation of communication, observation, and behavioural abilities.

For M.Des. (including Design Education)
DAT Mains is conducted separately by each NID for its disciplines: - NID Ahmedabad/Gandhinagar/Bengaluru: Studio Test (group-wise, except Group X which is discipline-wise) + separate Interview per discipline. - NID Madhya Pradesh & NID Haryana: Separate schedule, format, and venue announced on respective institute websites.

Weightage for final merit: Based on DAT Mains scores only; weightages announced later. Only candidates who appear for all Mains components are considered for the final merit list.

Note: In unforeseen circumstances (e.g., pandemic), NID reserves the right to conduct all tests entirely online, entirely offline, or in a hybrid mode. Check the admissions website for updates.

Syllabus

NID does not publish a detailed topic-wise syllabus. The handbooks describe the broad competencies assessed:

  • DAT Prelims: Design awareness, visual sensitivity, observation, drawing/sketching skills, analytical and logical reasoning, creativity, and problem-solving through text-and-visual questions.
  • DAT Mains (B.Des.): Studio Sensitivity Test (hands-on material exploration, 3D visualisation, model-making, thematic composition) and In-Person Sensitivity Test (portfolio discussion, communication, behavioural assessment).
  • DAT Mains (M.Des.): Studio Test (discipline-specific creative tasks) and Interview (portfolio review, domain knowledge, design thinking, motivation).

Candidates are advised to develop core design aptitude — sketching, visual thinking, observation, and creative problem-solving — rather than prepare for fixed topics.

  • Previous Year Papers: NID does not officially release past question papers or answer keys. The question booklet is considered confidential and is not shared even on request (handbook §10.1).

How to prepare (free, in order)

  1. Read the current handbook end-to-end — eligibility, dates, test centres, reservation, fees, and exam structure. The 2027–28 handbooks are linked above.
  2. Build core design aptitude daily — timed sketching from life, visual memory exercises, material exploration (paper, clay, wire), and creative problem-solving prompts.
  3. Practise past-year questions from memory-based collections — since NID doesn't release papers, aspirant forums and coaching blogs often compile memory-based questions; use them only as practice material, not as official sources.
  4. Prepare a portfolio (for Mains) — curate 10–15 pieces showing range: sketches, 3D models, digital work, process documentation. Be ready to discuss each piece.
  5. Track amendments — NID publishes amendments on the admissions website (e.g., seat changes, edit-window dates). Check weekly until the exam.
  6. Plan logistics early — test centre allotment is not guaranteed; arrange travel/accommodation for both Prelims and Mains independently.
