Electrical engineering core

Used by the engineering-jobs family (GATE, ESE, JE, PSU, state AE/JE). The overlap map has the full list.

What it covers

  • Circuits and fields: network theorems, transient and steady-state response, two-port networks, three-phase circuits; electrostatics, magnetostatics, magnetic circuits.
  • Signals, control, measurements: continuous and discrete signals, Fourier/Laplace/z-transforms; feedback, Bode/Nyquist/root-locus, PID, state space; bridges, instrument transformers, error analysis.
  • Machines, power, electronics: transformers, DC/induction/synchronous machines; generation, transmission, load flow, faults, protection, stability; diodes, op-amps, logic, ADC/DAC; thyristor/MOSFET/IGBT, converters, rectifiers, inverters.
  • Beyond GATE (ESE/JE only): electrical materials and computer fundamentals (ESE); estimation and costing, utilisation of electrical energy (SSC JE, RRB JE).

Where it counts

Family Exams
Engineering jobs: GATE, ESE, JE, PSU, state AE/JE GATE Electrical Engineering (EE), GATE Instrumentation Engineering (IN), PSU recruitment for EE graduates, RRB Junior Engineer (JE), Electrical, SSC Junior Engineer (JE), Electrical, State AE / JE (Electrical), UPSC Engineering Services (ESE), Electrical

Depth by exam family

Family What the exam rewards
GATE EE Full depth on all nine sections above, numerical plus theory
GATE IN Overlapping subset: circuits, machines basics, signals, control, analog/digital, measurements
ESE Electrical GATE core plus materials, computer fundamentals and microprocessors; descriptive mains answers
SSC JE, RRB JE, state AE/JE, PSU Diploma/BTech core at speed; JE adds estimation and utilisation

How to practise

Follow the GATE EE page order: circuits and maths first, then machines-power and signals-control. Solve official previous papers topic-wise from week one.
