Civil engineering core

Counts for 1 exams in this list (see the overlap map). Prepare it once.

What it covers

Checked against two official syllabi: the GATE 2027 CE syllabus (8 sections) and SSC JE 2026 Paper-II Part-A (Civil and Structural). They cover the same core; SSC JE sets it at diploma depth and adds estimating, costing and valuation.

  • Structures: engineering mechanics, solid mechanics, structural analysis, concrete and steel design
  • Geotechnical: soil mechanics, foundations, earth pressure, slope stability, ground improvement
  • Water and environment: fluid mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology, irrigation, water and wastewater treatment, air pollution, solid waste
  • Transport and survey: highways, pavements, traffic engineering, surveying and geomatics
  • Construction management: materials and mix design, PERT/CPM, estimation and costing

Where it counts

Family Exams
Engineering jobs: GATE, ESE, JE, PSU, state AE/JE GATE Civil Engineering (CE)

Depth by exam family

Family What the exam rewards
GATE CE Deepest: numerical MCQ/MSQ/NAT problems across all 8 syllabus sections
SSC JE (Civil) Same core at diploma depth, all MCQ; adds estimating, costing and valuation
ESE Civil, PSU, state AE/JE Same core again; ESE Mains is descriptive, so confirm depth from each notification

How to practise

Solid mechanics and structural analysis first: they carry the most marks and feed RCC and steel design. Then solve official GATE CE and SSC JE Civil papers topic by topic, tracking accuracy and seconds per question.
