Exam pattern¶
Preliminary (screening only; its marks are not counted for the final merit): two compulsory objective papers, General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II, of 200 marks each (400 marks in all), 2 hours each, with 100 objective questions of 2 marks each; all questions are compulsory. There is no negative marking; a question with more than one answer is treated as wrong and gets no marks, and a blank question carries no penalty. The papers are set in Hindi and English. The Main-exam selection list is about 5 times the advertised vacancies.
Main (written), six compulsory papers, no optional subjects:
| Paper | Subject | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | General Hindi and General English (two sections of 50 marks; qualifying only — minimum 30 out of 100, not counted for merit) | 100 | 3 hours |
| II | Language and Literature (one of the 15 languages listed in the notification) | 150 | 3 hours |
| III | Social Sciences (History and Geography, equal weightage) | 200 | 3 hours |
| IV | Indian Constitution and Polity, Public Administration and Good Governance | 200 | 3 hours |
| V | Indian Economy, Globalization and Sustainable Development | 200 | 3 hours |
| VI | General Sciences, Environment and Technology Development | 200 | 3 hours |
| Total marks (papers counted for merit) | 950 |
Paper-I is qualifying only: its marks are not counted for the merit list. The interview is 100 marks. Written (950 marks) + interview (100 marks) = grand total 1,050 marks.
Syllabus¶
- Preliminary General Studies Paper-I: Indian history, geography, polity and governance, economy and sustainable development, science and technology, national and international current events, and miscellaneous general awareness (human rights, environment, urbanization, sports, disaster management, poverty and unemployment, awards, international agencies).
- Preliminary General Studies Paper-II: Jharkhand-specific — state history and movements, society, culture and identity, folk literature, music and sites, Jharkhandi literature and authors, land laws such as CNT and SPT, geography, industry, state schemes, forest and environment, disaster management, and state current events.
- Main: Paper-II is one language and literature chosen from the notification's list; Papers III–VI expand the general-studies subjects above in descriptive form. The exact topic list is in the Combined Civil Services syllabus linked under Official sources.
How to prepare (free, in order)¶
- Prepare the shared UPSC GS modules once. They cover most of every state PSC.
- Add Jharkhand's own history, geography, economy and schemes from official state sources: the prelims Paper-II is Jharkhand-specific.
- Solve the commission's own previous papers from its website: each commission has its own style.
