GATE Civil Engineering (CE)

GATE Civil Engineering decides M.Tech/ME/PhD admission and is the recruitment filter for many PSUs. It is used by PSUs and for M.Tech admission, and prepares the core for ESE Civil and state AE (Civil) exams.

At a glance

Conducted by IISc Bengaluru and seven IITs for NCB-GATE (IIT Madras organises GATE 2027)
Exam dates (announced) 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027; results 19 March 2027
Who can apply Students in the 3rd year or higher of a UG programme, and graduates; no age limit, no attempt limit
Score validity 3 years

Exam pattern

Section Questions Marks
General Aptitude (common to all papers) 10 15
Civil Engineering incl. paper-specific Engineering Mathematics (~13 marks) 55 85
Total 65 100
  • Question types: MCQ (one correct), MSQ (one or more correct, no partial credit), NAT (numerical).
  • Negative marking for MCQ only: −1/3 (1-mark) and −2/3 (2-mark). MSQ and NAT have none.
  • 3 hours, computer-based test in English. One or two papers may be attempted (CE combinations on the official two-paper page).

Syllabus

The official CE syllabus PDF has 8 sections (revised for GATE 2027; the PDF is the authority):

  1. Engineering Mathematics: linear algebra, calculus, ODE, PDE (Fourier series; diffusion, wave and Laplace equations), probability and statistics, numerical methods.
  2. Structural Engineering: engineering mechanics, solid mechanics, structural analysis (force, displacement, stiffness-matrix and influence-line methods), concrete structures, steel structures.
  3. Geotechnical Engineering: phase relations and classification, permeability and seepage, effective stress, consolidation, shear strength, earth pressure, slope stability, shallow and deep foundations, ground improvement.
  4. Water Resources Engineering: fluid mechanics, hydraulics (open-channel flow, hydraulic jump, weirs), hydrology (unit hydrographs, flood estimation, groundwater), irrigation (duty-delta, dams, canals, weirs, river training).
  5. Environmental Engineering: water and wastewater quality and treatment, sewerage, air pollution, municipal solid waste and landfills.
  6. Transportation Engineering: roadway geometric design (IRC), railway track, airport runways, flexible and rigid pavements, traffic studies and signal design, four-step travel-demand modelling.
  7. Geomatics Engineering: surveying principles, GNSS, levelling, traversing and triangulation, total station, cartography and map projections, photogrammetry.
  8. Construction Materials and Management: steel, cement and concrete properties and mix design; estimation and costing, PERT/CPM scheduling, construction equipment, contracts.

How to prepare (free, in order)

  1. Solid mechanics and structural analysis first. They carry the most marks and feed design.
  2. Solve the official papers of past years (the organising IIT's site publishes them with answer keys).
  3. Cover Engineering Mathematics early: it is ~13 of the 85 subject marks and overlaps every core section.
