Indian Coast Guard Navik (GD) / Yantrik

Evidence status: 🟢 official. Every number below is from the Indian Coast Guard's CGEPT career pages (Navik GD, Yantrik, Navik DB) on joinindiancoastguard.cdac.in, fetched on 2026-09-28.

The Indian Coast Guard recruits Navik (General Duty) and Yantrik (Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical) through the Coast Guard Enrolled Personnel Test (CGEPT), held in two batches a year. Navik (Domestic Branch) is offered in some batches. Selection runs through four stages, and the final merit is based on the Stage-I written test.

Exam pattern

Stage I is an objective computer-based test (four options per question) with no negative marking. Marks are normalised across shifts before results are declared.

Navik (GD) takes Section I + Section II and must pass each section separately: 30 + 20 = 50 (UR/EWS/OBC) or 27 + 17 = 44 (SC/ST).

Section Questions Marks Time Split Pass (UR/EWS/OBC · SC/ST) Level
I 60 60 45 min Maths 20, Science 10, English 15, Reasoning 10, GK 5 30 · 27 Class 10
II 50 50 30 min Maths 25, Physics 25 20 · 17 Class 12 Maths and Physics

Yantrik takes Section I plus exactly one trade section — III (Electrical), IV (Electronics) or V (Mechanical); one trade per application. The same pass rule applies (30 + 20 = 50, or 27 + 17 = 44 for SC/ST, passing each section separately). Each trade section is 50 questions, 50 marks, 30 minutes, at diploma level in that trade, with pass marks 20 (UR/EWS/OBC) or 17 (SC/ST).

Stage-I ties are broken first on the higher Section-I score; see the batch notice for the remaining steps.

Stage II (1–2 days at the allotted centre) is qualifying only — Pass or Fail, with its marks excluded from the merit. It consists of an OMR-based assessment/adaptability test, then the Physical Fitness Test, then document verification and initial medicals. The PFT is a 1.6 km run in 7 minutes followed by 20 squat-ups (uthak-baithak) and 10 push-ups, all three done continuously without a break — any break fails the PFT.

Navik (DB) is a separate entry offered in some batches (it was part of CGEPT-02/26) with zone-wise merit like Navik (GD). Check the batch notice for whether DB is included and which sections it takes.

Syllabus

  • Section I (Class 10 level): maths (simplification, ratio-proportion, algebra, linear equations, trigonometry, mensuration, geometry, averages, interest, profit-loss, percentage, work-time-speed-distance); science (matter, universe, electricity, force and gravitation, Newton's laws, work-energy-power, heat, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds, measurement, sound, atomic structure); English (passages, prepositions, sentence correction, active-passive voice, tense, synonyms and antonyms); reasoning (spatial and numerical ability, sequences, coding-decoding); general awareness (geography, culture, freedom movement, history, defence, awards, discoveries, nutrition, current affairs, languages, capitals and currencies, sports, national symbols).
  • Section II (Class 11–12 CBSE level): physics (measurement, kinematics, laws of motion, work-energy-power, gravitation, properties of matter, thermodynamics, oscillations and waves, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, optics, atoms and nuclei, electronic devices, communication systems); mathematics (sets and functions, algebra, calculus, vectors and 3D geometry, coordinate geometry, probability and statistics).
  • Yantrik trade sections: diploma-level Electrical (Section III), Electronics (Section IV) or Mechanical (Section V) engineering syllabus, as listed on the Yantrik career page.

How to prepare (free, in order)

  1. Train for the PFT from day one: Stage II is only qualifying, but a single break between the run, squat-ups and push-ups fails you, and it decides many selections.
  2. Lock Section I first. It is common to every post and you must pass it separately (30/60 for UR/EWS/OBC, 27/60 for SC/ST).
  3. Build Section II (Navik GD) from Class 11–12 maths and physics, or your one trade section (Yantrik) from your diploma syllabus.
  4. There is no negative marking, so attempt every question — but the merit is normalised, so maximise your raw score rather than trying to game shifts.
  5. Practise with the official model question papers on the CGEPT portal before the exam.
